Abstract
Concepts of family systems theory and the importance of key life events involving family relationships are being increasingly acknowledged, leading to a recognition of the role of the family in the genesis and maintenance of illness in the individual. Awareness of the family's role is important for: 1) understanding the precipitants of illness; 2) helping patients cooperate with treatment plans; 3) preventing further deterioration in the identified patient; 4) monitoring the impact of the patient's illness on the health of other family members; and 5) implementing research on the etiology and treatment of all illnesses.
